Georgia Anne Muldrow

Georgia Anne Muldrow has made a name for herself in the world of neo-soul, cultivating the same sort of earth mother image as Erykah Badu. She has also injected some of the same creativity Badu has shown over the years.

With that in mind, Early is a fairly grounded record for Muldrow and is actually just what its title implies, a set of early studio recordings. It employs modern production but never abandons smooth, piano-and-Rhodes-based R&B.

SUNSET floats along beautifully, as Muldrow answers herself in a Greek soul chorus; ALONE WITH AN ANGEL is a spare shuffle full of warm vocal echoes and IN LOVE AGAIN displays Muldrows more-modern side with a loping beat and dissonant synths.

These are Georgia Anne Muldrows EARLY recordings. She wrote, produced and recorded this lean, ten track album entirely by herself but the sound of its backdrop and the maturity of the themes that accompany it, showcase an intimate knowledge of rhythm and syncopation well beyond her years.

Seventeen years young with an old soul, Georgia managed to blend the composing acumen of Roy Ayers and J Dilla with the vocal styling of Billie Holiday and Lauryn Hill. The results are both hot and cool, bitter and sweet, inside the lines and outside the box.

While not as experimental as her later releases, these early recordings add another piece to the puzzle, further displaying the broad scope of her gift. Most of what you are about to hear will seem like it was recorded in recent years allow yourself to marvel at the fact that it was not.
