Belle Du Berry & David Lewis
BELLE DU BERRY & DAVID LEWIS - QUIZZ
"..Swinging, joyous, up-beat... a singular feeling of celebration ...the songs unfold as if in a post-modern cabaret. On stage, as well as their repertoire of new songs, they add some carefully chosen covers , such as "Don't Smok In Bed", a song from the 30s, and "Intoxicated Man by Serge Gainsbourg". Elegant delights....
(Bertrand Dicale - www.rfi.fr)
"Even though her English is minimal, du Berry managed to seduce the audience from the very beginning, introducing each song with her wide-eyed, philosophical sense of humor..."
Belle Du Berry & David Lewis, aficionados Paris Combo, which Belle is known for the exquisite singer, are probably not very surprised by this duo project, but are oh so thrilled to find a classy vocal tone as strange that, at the both feline and warm, and playing shifts to slight discrepancies in the service of text engraved and malicious. Belle du Berry in all its splendor! Songs in French but also English texts very female but also male, the acoustic sound but also pop Belle du Berry, best known for his pen and voice of the band Paris Combo, a book collection of new songs, co-written with the trumpeter and pianist David Lewis. The duo left the highway touring and studio time to create this intimate repertory, a sort of secret garden, "Hidden and perfumed. Texts written for four hands: Accompanied on stage by Denis Henault-Parizel on bass and guitar, Belle du Berry and David Lewis play unreleased titles they have written for four hands. "We write our own neighborhood and then we gather our texts. The result jazz, rock and pop is interesting. The duo made a detour through the Bains-Douches in Lignieres. Inured to the scene, the fine was comfortable. The style differs from the Paris Combo, but Spirit Magic, Daughter or mother Quiz deliver realistic texts on music accomplished. For percussion, accordion and vocals, Belle du Berry takes the stage for his distinctive voice as David Lewis does not hesitate to blow his trumpet while playing the piano.
Paris Combo is acclaimed world-wide and much loved in Melbourne. Belle and
David hope their audiences will experience and perhaps evoke local memories from
when they performed sell-out performances at the famous Melbourne music venue
The Continental before it closed.
Belle when talking about the new CD said:
"We wanted to write songs as a duo again, as we did when we first met at the
Cabaret Sauvage in Paris in '94, and during the early part of Paris Combo's career.
When you are in a group you have to try and find the common denominator of its
members - here we wanted to explore new directions and ideas and the lyrics deal
with more intimate issues such as women's place in society, cultural and language
differences."
Bertrand Dicale, the former music critic for La Figaro describes Belle's voice as:
"Reminiscent of Eartha Kitt and Marie-Jose Neuville"
