Saint-Germain-des-Pres Cafe Volume 12

Various Artists

The Reference Nu Jazz collection is back with a new definition ! Under the name Saint Germain des prés Café, the whole concept evolves after more that 950 000 copies sold worldwide. As you may have noticed through many volumes already, Saint Germain des Prés Café started to flirt with several musical genres. With this new volume, if the selection remains sharp and eclectic, it has become wider although very down tempo flavoured still. This "Blue Edition" - as a nod in the direction of the colour  traditionally representing Jazz, Saint Germain des Prés Café Collection essence - invites the British MR SCRUFF who has selected and mixed for us the second CD of this new edition. This Manchester kid has exclusively chosen great tracks from Ninja Tunes catalogue that he represents and that is about to celebrate its 20th anniversary this year.

Ninja Tunes is an independent electronic music label created in the UK in 1991 by two Djs, Matt Black and Jonathan Moore (aka Coldcut) as they aimed to propose more underground productions free from the limitations imposed to the artists. Eclectic and diversified through its affiliated labels, Ninja Tunes is famous for its endless "good sound" search and brings together many prestigious artists as Amon Tobin, Bonobo, The Cinematic Orchestra, Coldcut, Dj Food, Kid Koala, Roots Manuva and of course MR SCRUFF !

MR SCRUFF (Andy Carthy) is a British DJ from the very prolific Manchester scene that started in the 80's. MR SCRUFF got famous for his long Dj sets and for his home made cartoons screenplayed during his performances. After several mixtapes and a few great vinyl editions, he released through Ninja Tunes, the albums "Keep it Unreal" and "Trousers" that sold thousands of copies, confirming both his talent and changeability.  In 1999, his track " Get a move on" met a fantastic success that made him well know abroad.

Since then, there is no need to introduce his serious groove but also great sense of humour any more. This electro-breakbeat-ska-jazz-hip hop kid has recorded for more than 30 labels, worked with Marc Rae (Grand Central) and remixed amongst others, Nightmares on Wax...

While mixing, his minimum sets last 4 hours and bring together hip hop, salsa, but also house, funk, breakbeat rarities and scratches, guided by the fact that :

"The only real criteria is that the music has to have soul"
